Primary Care

AbsoluteCARE provides comprehensive primary health care to adolescents ages 16 years and older as well as adult patients. Health, wellness and prevention are the core of our approach to every patient’s individual care.

Our Practice

Our Practice

AbsoluteCARE provides comprehensive primary health care to adolescents (16 years and older) and adult patients. Our comprehensive approach is specifically geared towards care for health, wellness and prevention. Our practice specializes in the management of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, COPD, heart disease, congestive heart failure and asthma.

Dr. David Stahura has 20 years of experience and leads our bilingual team of professionals in the delivery of care. Dr. Stahura is Board Certified by the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and the American Board of Geriatrics; he has extensive experience working in private practice.

The AbsoluteCARE team is committed to providing the highest level of care to patients…we look forward to working with you.

Hospital Care

Patients of AbsoluteCARE enjoy a level of care that surpasses other practices in the area. Our goal is to keep our patients healthy but in the event that hospitalization is needed our physicians have privileges at Piedmont Medical Center, one of the premier facilities in Atlanta. Being in the hospital is stressful; being treated by the team who knows you and your family instead of hospital staff results in better continuity of care.

Education Resources

Education and support are key components of providing comprehensive care. Our Education and Wellness Center is dedicated to providing innovative programs and services that enhance patient understanding of medical care, support in managing side effects, and demonstrate improved adherence.

Nurse Coach/Educator

AbsoluteCARE provides the benefit of a Nurse Coach/Educator to address your concerns related to specific conditions, prescribed therapies or side effects, or to answer general questions concerning medical care.

Registered Dietitian

Nutrition plays a vital role in managing your health and wellness. All patients at AbsoluteCARE have the opportunity to see the dietitian for an assessment, including a BMI (body mass index) or BIA (body impedance analysis). Whether you want to improve your overall state of health and nutrition or you need assistance managing a more serious condition (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, weight loss or weight gain), we are here to help.

Group Programs

Our group programs provide a different approach to learning. Group educational programs are routinely offered and include:

  • Diabetes Classes – Learn how to control your diabetes and still enjoy eating.
  • Grocery Store Tours – Take the confusion out of reading product labels and make the most of your money while learning how to make healthy choices.
  • Healthy Cooking Class – Learn new and interesting ways to prepare healthy meals.
  • Zumba – Enjoy this fast paced and exciting dance and exercise class.
  • Yoga – Enjoy the chance to exercise, relax and improve your health all at once.

AbsoluteCARE is a bilingual primary care practice that provides health care with a comprehensive approach. Our dedicated providers offer a full range of high-quality services, all on-site. We offer a variety of diagnostic and treatment options and work closely with each patient in order to determine the best course of care. Many procedures are performed in our office.

Dermatologic Procedures

At AbsoluteCARE, we routinely serve our patients with many different types of treatments and procedures to treat a variety of skin conditions and minor injuries.

Mole, skin tag or wart removals are common minimally invasive procedures. Mole removal is often performed when a benign, typical mole causes discomfort or irritation or an atypical mole presents as irregular or unusual. The reason these atypical moles are removed is because they are more likely than ordinary moles to develop into melanoma, a type of skin cancer. Melanoma is one of the most deadly cancers, mainly because people assume that a mole or lesion is merely a benign freckle or normal mole. The cancer can spread from the surface of the skin down into the inner tissues, to the muscles and bones and into the blood, where it can then spread to other parts of the body and remain undetected for years.

Typical moles are very common and people may develop new moles from time to time until about the age of 40. These benign, typical growths on the skin are usually brown, tan or pink, and can either appear flat or raised. They are most often round or oval and usually are usually small in size. It is important to note that if you are ever uncertain about a mole, spot or what appears to be a freckle that you contact our office for further evaluation.

If you should find a mole or growth that is irregular in shape, is different shades, has changed in outline or color, is asymmetrical or seems to have grown larger suddenly, make sure that you contact our office as soon as possible for an evaluation appointment and to discuss possible mole biopsy and excision options.

A wart is a hardened, bumpy, or rough piece of skin that grows faster than normal. Most warts are harmless, but the virus that causes warts is contagious and can be spread by direct contact with others. Warts may develop anywhere on the body, including the bottom of the feet, palm of the hands, fingers and genitals. Warts are typically brown or flesh-colored, although genital warts may also appear pink or red.

Preventive Health

At AbsoluteCARE, we believe that quality health care begins with preventative care and health maintenance. As a premier practice, we know the importance of helping our patients understand that the lifestyle choices they make today really will affect the quality of their lives in the future.

Our staff has made it their mission to share information with patients that will have a positive impact on their future health. In addition to primary care, your AbsoluteCARE physician can offer lifestyle and wellness care because we believe that prevention really is worth a pound of cure!

Your visits to our office may entail extended, informative consultations and personalized coaching to help you create positive lifestyle changes, including stress management, smoking cessation, weight loss and much more. A positive lifestyle is directly related to your physical health, and we strive to help our patients by providing the education, tools and support necessary to live a longer, happier and healthier life.

A commitment to wellness and preventative health means making a sound investment in your future well-being; this preventive care will lead to finding issues before they become serious complications that lead to other, more complex conditions. Preventive care includes examinations and screening tests that are tailored to a patient's age, health and family history. For example, a person with a family history of certain diseases would begin screening at an earlier age and/or more frequently for those diseases than those with no family history.

We know that each patient is unique and AbsoluteCARE treats each individual and his or her specific needs. It is our goal to target your potential concerns earlier, when they are the most easily treated.

To learn more about the preventative health services please contact our office.

Family Planning

Family Planning at AbsoluteCARE focuses on natural family planning and traditional methods of birth control. Questions and discussion are encouraged and will include benefits, drawbacks, potential risks and side effects, and failure rates associated with various methods of family planning.

Birth control is a personal choice and is dependent upon your needs. Some people only need to prevent pregnancy. Other people may also want to protect themselves or their partners from diseases that can be passed by having sex, such as Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), Chlamydia, human papillomavirus (HPV), herpes, gonorrhea and syphilis.

Talk with your doctor about the pros and cons of each birth control option. While no method of birth control is absolutely 100% effective, the chances of pregnancy or infection transmission can be drastically reduced with proper use of several different methods. Methods that are offered at AbsoluteCARE include:

  • Natural Family Planning: Natural family planning requires a couple to learn when in the woman's cycle she can get pregnant, which is generally 4 days before and 2 days after ovulation. This method requires a lot of commitment and planning in order to be successful.
  • Barrier Methods: Barrier methods include male and female condoms, the contraceptive sponge, the cervical cap and the diaphragm, which prevent pregnancy by blocking sperm from entering the uterus.
  • Birth Control Pills: Birth control pills work by preventing the release of an egg by the ovaries (ovulation); they contain estrogen and progestin. The pill must be taken at the same time every day in order for it to be effective.
  • Hormonal Patch: This birth control patch also uses progestin and estrogen to prevent pregnancy, and is used on a 4-week cycle. A new patch is applied to the skin once a week for three weeks, and during the 4th week of your menstrual cycle you will not use a patch.
  • Vaginal Contraceptive Ring: This is a thin, flexible ring that is inserted into the vagina to release the hormones estrogen and progestin to prevent pregnancy. After insertion, the ring remains in place for three weeks; on the start of the 4th week during menstruation it is removed.
  • Hormone Shots: These work in similar ways to the birth control pill; they are long-lasting and require little "maintenance." However, some patients have side effects such as headaches, mood swings and weight gain. Depending on the type of hormone shot given, pregnancy can be prevented for up to three months at a time.

Other options that are not offered at AbsoluteCARE include:

  • Intrauterine Devices (IUDs): An IUD is inserted into the uterus by a doctor and is made of flexible plastic. These are very effective, but some patients may develop side effects such as heavier bleeding and cramping during periods.
  • Vasectomies and Tubal Ligations (Sterilization):  These are surgical procedures to permanently prevent pregnancy. Tubal ligation involves closing off the fallopian tubes so that eggs are unable to reach the uterus. Men are sterilized with a vasectomy, which includes the sperm ducts being closed off to block the movement of sperm.

For more information about our family planning services, to schedule an appointment or to learn more about your options, please contact our office.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic Care is offered to our patients as a means of improving joint function, eliminating pain, and preventing further injury. A chiropractor uses his or her hands to manipulate the spine into alignment. Chiropractic therapy is used on its own or with other treatments. Chiropractic therapy may be useful in many situations, and patients can assess or be referred to our chiropractor for evaluation. If you are interested to know if chiropractic care may be beneficial to you, please contact our office for a consultation.

AbsoluteCARE partners with Atlanta Spine Center to bring patients this service within the AbsoluteCARE office. To learn more about Atlanta Spine Center, please visit them at atlantaspinecenter.com.

Immunizations and Flu Shots

Receiving vaccinations, also known as immunizations, is an easy way to protect you and your family from many serious, sometimes fatal, illnesses. If you do receive immunizations and still contract a disease, symptoms are less severe. Failure to get the recommended immunizations can result in serious illness, chronic conditions and even death from diseases such as influenza, hepatitis B, meningitis, tetanus and measles.  Immunizations should start at birth and continue throughout the course of a patient's life. Our staff can answer any questions or concerns you may have about these immunizations.

Many adults incorrectly assume their needs for immunization ends when they reach adulthood. There are several specific vaccines you need as an adult. Your needs will be determined by factors including your lifestyle, age, gender, overall health, previous immunizations, type and locations of travel and more. Did you know that tetanus and diphtheria shots should be given once every ten years? When was the last time you made an appointment with your doctor for these vaccines?

Call AbsoluteCARE for information about special immunizations if you are in close contact with people who have an infectious disease, you are planning on international travel or you live with a person who has a compromised immune system.

Laboratory Services

The AbsoluteCARE staff appreciates that accurate and timely laboratory testing is critical to the well-being and health of our patients. Many treatment decisions are based directly on laboratory results. When reliable laboratory results are available, more accurate diagnoses and more efficient treatment becomes available to our patients. This is an important step in helping our patients get well and stay healthy.

We know that lab results are more than just numbers, especially to our patients. This is why our providers work very closely with patients and their families to make sure they understand each detail regarding testing, diagnosis and treatment options.

AbsoluteCARE features an on-site CLIA certified lab and offers state-of-the-art technology. Offering labwork on-site serves several purposes. Our patients do not have to travel to another location for many lab tests; they are done conveniently on-site. Diagnoses are made more quickly, which means that treatments are often prescribed before our patients leave our office. It is in this way that AbsoluteCARE distinguishes itself from other physician offices.

On-site Laboratory Testing includes:

  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Coagulation
  • Hematology
  • Immunology
  • Microbiology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Serology
  • Urinalysis

Our doctors understand that waiting for laboratory results can be extremely stressful, so our office medical staff members work together with laboratory professionals to make sure that all lab tests are taken, results are interpreted and findings delivered to our patients as quickly as possible to try to avoid some of that unhealthy stress.

For more information about what our laboratory services offer or to schedule an appointment, please contact our office.

Massage

Massage can be utilized in lieu of or in combination with other treatments to relieve stress and pain. Massage has been practiced for thousands of years. Today, if you need or want a massage, you can choose from a range of therapy styles with a wide variety of pressures, movements and techniques. These all involve pressing, rubbing or manipulating muscles and other soft tissues with hands and fingers.

According to an American Massage Therapy Association survey, almost a quarter of all adult Americans had at least one massage in the previous year. While the reasons for doing so may be varied, more people recognize the health benefits of massage. Reasons often include relief from symptoms or to heal injuries, to help with certain health conditions, and to promote overall wellness.

Chaye Wise, CMT, provides the following massage services by appointment at AbsoluteCARE:

  • Therapeutic Relaxation Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Warm Hand Massage
  • Neck Knot Massage

Your overall well-being is our primary concern and thus services are provided at an affordable rate.

Nurse Education

Nurse Education provides our patients with the additional support and “TLC” that is needed when dealing with medical care. Nurse Educator Dian Sheffield, NP-C, is available to answer your questions concerning your diagnosis, how best to take your medication and how to deal with potential side effects.

It is this type of extra support that sets AbsoluteCARE apart from other primary care offices. If you need assistance in managing your medications, you are having difficulty in managing side effects, or you simply have a question concerning your diagnosis, treatment or care, please call our office to speak with Dian.

Nutrition Assesment

Nutrition plays an important role in your health and wellness. As the old saying goes, you are what you eat. Our dietician, Alene Albritton, MPH, RD, LD, is not here to simply tell you what you should not eat. It is our goal to assist you in making reasonable choices that will meet your health needs and goals.

Alene is available by appointment for individual consultation. Consultation includes an assessment of your BMI (body mass index) and a BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis), which measures lean and fat body mass as well as hydration levels. Whether you are simply interested in knowing which vitamin and minerals would be recommended, curious about proper meal planning, or would like information concerning food safety, we are here to answer your questions.

Particular areas in which proper nutrition plays a key role in terms of prevention or disease management include:

  • Weight Loss
  • Weight Gain
  • Diabetes
  • High Cholesterol
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Osteoporosis
  • Cancer
  • Gastrointestinal Conditions
  • Anemia
  • Renal Disease

We also provide group sessions, such as diabetes classes, healthy cooking classes and a walking group. If you are interested in an individual session or a group class, please call our office for more information.

Diabetes Education – Share the challenges with others living with diabetes.

Grocery Store Tour – Learn how to read labels and better understand ingredients.

Healthy Cooking – Learn ways to modify your favorite foods into a healthier version, while learning important cooking tips.

Physical Exams

There are many reasons to see your doctor, even for the healthiest of people. Regular checkups for men for prostate examinations may catch prostate cancer in its early stages when it is the most treatable. Women who have never had any symptoms should get yearly PAP exams. Cancer screening is performed often for many people, regardless of their ages. There are many things we can do in order to stay healthy and well. One of the simplest and best things you can do is to have a routine physical exam done by your physician.

Even if you seem healthy, regular physical exams will, if nothing else, allow you to get to know our doctors on a personal level. Crises occur, and if you experience a medical emergency it is comforting to know that you will have a doctor that you know and trust helping you every step of the way.

Teaching healthy habits is one other reason for keeping regularly scheduled appointments for physical exams. Getting ideas for disease prevention, statistics, tips and education are the main reason that people should see their doctor, even if they are feeling great.

During the physical exam, the doctor listens to your body rather than your voice. The exam is generally performed in a set order. After or during the exam, physicians record the results, both normal and abnormal. The physical exam begins with checking the vital signs, which are pulse (heart rate), blood pressure, respiratory rate (breaths per minute) and temperature. Vital signs can often signal the presence of a problem, and they also establish a normal baseline to use as a reference point for future appointments. Our doctors approach the exam by system: cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, nervous and musculoskeletal.

It is important that you relay any new information to your doctors about symptoms, maladies or questions you have about your body. Even if you think it may be nothing significant, you trust your doctors to recognize signs and symptoms of conditions, especially when you don't. We always encourage patients to contact our office in regards to any questions or concerns they may have, no matter how insignificant they may seem.

For more information about our physical exams and other medical services, to schedule an appointment with one of our highly trained physicians or to learn more about AbsoluteCARE, please call our office.

Radiology Services

AbsoluteCARE’s radiology services are state certified and ultrasound services are ICAEL certified. Our staff knows that accurate and timely results are important to your well-being and peace of mind. AbsoluteCARE provides services on-site for the convenience of our patients and to allow our providers the ability to make timely treatment recommendations. We know waiting for the answers can be the worst part of going to the doctor and want to do all that we can to lessen that wait when possible.

Our staff employs state-of-the-art technology to diagnose, monitor and treat a variety of conditions and to help our patients maintain health and wellness through prevention and early detection.

On-site services include:

Abdominal Aorta Duplex – Aorta duplex ultrasound is a procedure that uses ultrasound to look for an aneurysm in the aorta. The aorta is the main artery in the chest and abdomen; this artery supplies oxygenated blood to the body.

Bone Densitometry – Bone densitometry scanning, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), is an enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss. DEXA is most often used to diagnose bone loss, and track the effects of treatment for osteopenia, osteoporosis and other conditions that results in bone loss.

Carotid Duplex – Carotid duplex is a procedure that uses ultrasound to look for blood clots, plaque buildup and other blood flow problems in the carotid arteries. The carotid arteries are located in the neck; they supply blood to the brain.

Chest X-ray – A chest x-ray is a radiographic study of the chest, lungs, heart, large arteries, ribs and diaphragm. A chest x-ray is used to diagnose the cause of a persistent cough, chest injury, chest pain or difficulty breathing.

Complete Echocardiogram – An echocardiogram is a test that uses sound waves to create a moving picture of the heart. The picture is much more detailed than a plain x-ray image and involves no radiation exposure.

Ultrasound – Ultrasound involves the use of high-frequency sound waves to create images of organs and systems within the body.

Smoking Cessation

More people than ever before are contemplating their options when it comes to smoking cessation programs. Our staff is here to offer different options that may ultimately result in beating that unhealthy habit for good! Sadly, tobacco use is the number one most common preventable cause of death. We all know that smoking cessation is important for your health for multiple reasons. About 50% of smokers who do not quit smoking die of smoking-related problems. Our staff knows that quitting is not easy and we are here to help patients break free from the dangers of smoking.

Within hours after you quit, your body's circulation starts to improve and your blood pressure decreases. You may not have noticed a change in your ability to smell and taste, but after you quit you will notice your sense of taste and smell returning. Breathing becomes easier, and with every year that passes that you remain smoke-free, your chance of getting cancer decreases.

Our doctors have a variety of tools and support systems, medications and therapies that may be just what you need. Some people quit smoking cold turkey, and others benefit from step-down programs, counseling, medicines or other products such as a nicotine patch to break their addiction. We can help you find what works for you. Don't give up! A majority of people who have quit smoking or want to quit smoking have tried many, many times before they were finally successful. If you are ready to stop smoking for good or you would like more information, call our office.

Social Work

AbsoluteCARE provides our patients with the added benefit of access to a social worker. Whether you have questions about your disability, COBRA, Medicare coverage or patient assistance programs for medication, we are here to help. Kim Turner, LMSW, is available to answer your questions and assist in completing what can often be time-consuming paperwork. If you have questions about your benefits or if you are struggling with financial difficulties (medical or non-medical), please do not hesitate to contact Kim. In this difficult economic climate many individuals need access to information and assistance…and we are here to meet that need.

To schedule an appointment or address your specific concerns, please call our office.

Women’s Health

Women’s health covers a variety of illnesses, conditions and diseases, including screening and early detection procedures for treating breast, uterine, ovarian and cervical cancers. Women’s health involves menopause and the symptoms that are associated with this aspect of a woman's life. Even though a woman technically reaches menopause when she has not had a menstrual cycle for one year, the symptoms and changes that signal this change can start several years prior.

Symptoms of menopause include hot flashes and night sweats, painful menstrual cramps, changes in periods, difficulty sleeping, depression, vaginal dryness and/or yeast infections, mood swings, breast examinations and many others. Many symptoms that you may be suffering from may very well be linked to one of the particular women's health issues that are common, so if you have unanswered questions or are concerned about any symptom or sign that you cannot pinpoint the cause of, it is important that you call our doctors for an appointment.

To maintain good health, women are encouraged to exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of water and get plenty of sleep. Many women find it difficult to juggle their busy schedules and focus on taking as good of care of themselves. It is important that you talk with your doctor about how to best address any issues, symptoms, illnesses or conditions you may have so that you can properly begin to take care of yourself.

For more information about our services, please call to schedule an appointment.
